Underwater Bridge
Taking advantage of the nice day, we headed out about 11am to do some of the gravel roads in the Uwharrie area. We have written many stories about this area but have not visited since last fall, we decided to give it a go. There was also an nice two lane road from Troy to Rockingham that I wanted to try so starting in this area made sense.
From the start, tried a new road to get out to the forest. It is nothing spectacular but just a different way of getting there. Typically it is Hwy 49 to 109 and you are there. Hwy 49 can be a boring highway and sometimes traffic so we took Hwy 73 thru Mount Pleasant to Millingport Road (1134). Taking a left at the Marathon station, just follow it until you get to Richfield. Then take a right on Hwy 49 until you get to 109. This is the start of the first gravel route.
This is short but fun route that is about 40% dirt / gravel. It goes through some really nice wooded areas with a few good twisties. Once we finished that, we wanted to head over to Low Water Bridge. We did not have a direct route for this so we just took a few back gravel roads to 109 and headed towards the bridge.
When we arrived at the bridge, crossing was a no go. The bridge must have been under at least 3 feet of water. We have been getting some rain lately but I did not think it would be like this.
So we backtracked and headed over to the Bigfoot Bar and Grill for some lunch. It was not crowded but the beer was cold and the food was good. After about an hour, we headed over to Troy via the Yates Campground road (this is a long dirt track that is a lot of fun) to pick up the Perkin Road route. This is supposed to be a nice 2 lane drive from Troy to Rockingham.
This turned out to be a very nice ride. Again, little traffic, a few good twisties, and just a scenic route. Once we arrived in Rockingham, we headed over to the Hide-A-Way Tavern. I wanted to check it out. You can read the write up but it was a good find. Too bad it is so far away as I would not mind just hanging out there.
After about an hour, we decided to head back home. The ride home was nothing eventful but just rounded out a great day of riding and exploring new things.
