Route 66 - Day 6

Route 66 - Day 6
Day 6

We were sorry to leave our hosts in Richland.

Our bunk a biker hosts

We got up and packed and were able to get out by 9:30am. Today was another great weather day. After leaving there house, Route 66 was only about 7 miles away. With both our GPS units running, we hit the road.

As usual, tons of cool buildings and hotels. The first was the Munger Hotel.

It looked great. Across the street was an dilapidated hotel where you can no longer read the sign. Too bad since it was a cool looking building.

The roads today were great. Tons of 2 lane goodness. We really like it when they get a bit rough since it feels more realistic. We stopped for a bio break and the Kum & Go. Great name.

Kum & Go?

Next up was Springfield - the home of the original Steak and Shake. Yes, we had lunch.

Driving thru Springfield, we came across the Red's "Giant Hamburg" sign. This is supposedly the very first drive in. The owner misjudged the height of the sign so the "er" had to be left off. Oops.

Should have made the sign taller!!!

We then passed this vine covered building that is famous but I cannot recall what it is. Cool picture though.

Further down the road we came across a really cool Sinclair gas station in Gay Parita (Gary's gas station), So much cool memorabilia.  We did get our Route 66 sticker.

After winding around on 66, we came across a really cool metal bridge. It seemed to be an engineering feat .... over engineered for such a tiny creek but it was cool.

Interesting metal bridge.

As we traveled down the road, a truck was getting was getting up Kirk's ass so in Avill, MO, I pulled over in a parking lot for some building to let it pass. Across the street we saw Bernie's Bar and Grill. Oh yes, we had to stop.

Great place. Great people. We stayed longer that we wanted but worth it.

As we made our way to the end of Missouri, so many cool towns and features like the Boots Hotel.

Eventually we got to Joplin and into Kansas.

We were sorely disappointed with 66 in Kansas. Not much there other than a cool bridge.

Thankfully we were only in Kansas for 3 miles. Then we hit Oklahoma. Yes, a 3 state day.

We only needed to get to Miami (pronounced Mi-am-mah) to get to our hosts home. We arrived just before 6 and she was a great host. What a meal of BBQ chicken, smoked cauliflower, and sweet potatoes.

We unpacked into our bedroom and hung out in the living room talking and having a few drinks. We are so thankful that we found another good host.
