Route 66 - Day 20

Route 66 - Day 20
Day 20

We woke up in our cabin, made coffee, and ate a protein bar since the office is not open yet (we got up early). Today is when we split up. Kirk goes north and I continue east. I lose an hour today and have over 450 miles to go. Kirk has 435 but does not lose any time.

I got ready first, said our good byes and hit the road. It was cold this am....48. I was a bit chilly to start but new it would not last. I just turned on my hand warmers and my seat warmer. After about an hour, I had to turn them off. It hit almost 60.

I was going to push very hard today. My first stop was at 90 minutes. I only had two other stops. I left at 7:30 (which would be 8:30) and arrived at 4:30. Really good time.

The big issue was the wind. Once I hit the plains, it was blowing over 20mph consistently. No big gusts but this is enough to make the ride difficult. I decided to slow my speed to 65 (speed limit is 75) and stay in right lane. Very good move. If a truck passed me, it is not so turbulent. If I pass them, its like being in a pinball machine.

The ride was a bit strenuous but overall it went smoothly. I was expecting more aches and pains but it was not worse than normal. I finally got to the Elk City/Clinton KOA.

I found a local restaurant in Canute called Friends Pub and Pizza for dinner.

Tomorrow. the ride is only 258. Easy compared to today. No reason to wake up early and ride. Take my time and smell the roses. There is a 66 museum I want to catch as well.

Total miles today? 449
