Route 66 - Day 17

Route 66 - Day 17
Day 17

Today will be a short day. About 200 miles or so (we hope). It will be tough as we need to go through the desert again but this time it is MUCH hotter. We got up and got our free breakfast and coffee. We packed and hit the road about 10am.

The first 150 miles are interstate. It was hot. We stopped at one rest area about 50 miles from our turn off. We found some shade, drank some water, ate a snack then headed to Catfish Paradise.

An electric bus being towed by diesel...so much for the future of clean fuel

This in in Arizona so cheap gas. We know the Chevron station and we wanted to go back.

Once we got the Catfish, we were sweating. Its 90+. The station is pretty cool since they have quite a nice inventory of bourbons. This place is in the middle of nowhere yet they are selling 60-80$ bottles of bourbon. Very cool. I got what I needed and we cut across the rest of the desert going back to Oatman (the donkeys). On the way we encountered quite a few of these furry fellows.

Typical view on the way to Oatman

Once in Oatman, we hit the ONLY restaurant in town for a drink and appetizers. We stayed for 60-90 minutes to cool off and rest.

We left Oatman and we got to ride the Sidewinder once again. 8 miles of 192 curves with no guardrails. Very cool. Very fun.

We survived a second time

At the end of the ride in Cool Springs is a GREAT old gas station and general store (no gas as they are the old pumps). You really need to go in there. We spent about 30 mins or so in there. Got t-shirts and then headed for Kingman where we will stay the for the night.

Once here, we looked for a hotel and settles on Roadway Inn. It is dated but clean. We will find a local place to eat, sleep, and head out the Turquoise mine and store. in the morning. Then our ride takes us back to Holbrook where we get to stay at the Wigwam. So stoked for that.
