Route 66 - Day 14
We both slept pretty hard last night. The wind from the day before really wiped us out. Woke up and did our morning routine of coffee, breakfast, clean up, etc. We got all packed up and were ready to go about 9am.
We left on our way to the California border. We cut thru Williams again. This town if very cool. They have really embraced the Route 66 concept.
I am sure it helps that this city is the gateway to the Grand Canyon. We left Williams and had to get on Route 66.
We finally were able to leave the interstate and got on a VERY long section of road. It went on for 80-90 miles. Along the way we went thru a few towns that also embraced the 66 nostalgia. Motels, gas stations, and all types of stands.
Eventually we got to the Hualapai Indian reservation. There is a off road track to the Colorado river. First we went to the lodge. They said to go the office across the street. We went to the office and it was locked. I talked to a guy and he said to just head out there and there will be a person at the cattle guard with the permits to purchase. We got there. Nobody. But there was a sign - No Motorcycles. Since this was Indian land, we decided to abide by the sign and left disappointed.
Further down the road, we noticed this out of the way saloon. We turned around and went back. Great choice. We met up with a local from Kingman and he bought us a beer. He also told us where to eat lunch (Hooch's). He took us to it from the bar and we ate lunch.
It was a ton of food but very good. We left there and headed to Oatman. On our way we came to Cool Springs.
Cool General Store at the start of the "Sidewinder". This a curvy section of road in the mountains with 191 curves. It is 8 miles long. And no guardrails.
Very cool ride. One the way, we came across a donkey in the road. We stopped to get by it.
The view on the Sidewinder is incredible. Eventually we came to Oatman.
Oatman is a town overrun by donkeys. Even the mayor is a donkey. The town looks as if it came out of the late 1800s. Very cool place.
We left Oatman and hit the desert. This was so desolate. You felt as if you were on another planet. We were totally by ourselves. Eerie yet very cool at the same time.
We finally made it to a town and stopped for fuel. We headed to Needles, CA which is close to our hosts house. We got waved at the border so they did not need to search our bikes. Whoa. Gas is $7.59 / gallon.
We got back in Arizona and headed to Fort Mojave.
We arrived at our hosts home and got settled in. We were welcomed in got dinner. We are in the process of getting our beds situated and things charged. Tomorrow we head to San Bernardino.
