Route 66 - Day 13
Cool temperatures again last night but it was so much quieter than the last campground (we are not near any interstates). After getting up, made coffee and breakfast. It is going to be a another VERY windy day. The temperatures will hover around 70 but not a cloud in the sky so it will feel much warmer.
Our goal today is to head to the Grand Canyon. Yes, there will be throngs of people and traffic but we will do our best to avoid as much as we can. We stopped across the street for gas and headed out. It is 54 miles to the canyon.
Once we started driving, we did notice the wind. It is pretty strong today. It is supposed to get up to around 25mph in the afternoon (with gusts higher...wonderful).
Great ride. Not much traffic. We did have to wait to get in.
There was a line. Once we paid, we headed the canyon. We stopped at many of the scenic overlooks.
One was really nice so we found a quiet spot (no people) and ate lunch and had a beverage.
The canyon is such an awesome sight. Pictures do not do it justice at all. The vastness and depth of the entire landscape is really hard to capture.
I am really glad we stopped. We were able to see two different groups of elk.
Both had a huge bull and the females. Very cool.
We decided enough is enough and decided to leave. Man, the wind was really bad. We had to drive 60 miles to Williams for groceries. We had to fight the bikes. What a workout! We made it and found a Safeway.
After that, we found a brewery and food. We will eat and then head back to camp. I am sure we will sleep good tonight.
Total miles today? 174
